The 6th International Conference on Low Carbon Asia and Beyond (ICLCA) was held online at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from September 1st to 2nd, 2020. The theme of the conference is “Urban Sustainability towards Human Well-Being”, aiming to explore sustainable development issues and measures in the context of urbanization.
The conference was co-sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and was co-organized by Beijing Normal University and Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It attracted more than 160 experts and scholars from 20 countries around the globe. Vice President Zhang Ansheng of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Secretary Hu Weiwei, Dean Geng Yong and Vice Dean Xu Zhenming (Conference Chairman from China) of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Zhao Changying, Dean of the China-UK Low Carbon College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University attended the meeting. Executive Vice President Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail and Professor Chin Siong Ho (Conference Chairman from Malaysia) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia attended the opening ceremony. Vice President Zhang Ansheng and Vice President Datuk Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail delivered speeches on behalf of the sponsor, Dean Geng Yong gave a speech on behalf of the organizer, and Professor Chin Siong Ho addressed the conference on behalf of the chairman of the conference.
The conference consists of conference report, branch report and poster report. The 8 conference reports were from Academician Fu Bojie of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director General YBhg. Dato' TPr Mohd Anuar bin Maidin of the Malaysian Urban and Rural Planning Bureau, Professor Kazuhiko TAKEUCHI of the University of Tokyo, Professor Jiři Jaromir Klemeš, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Cleaner Production, and Researcher Yan Xiaoyuan from Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Senior Researcher Wu Weimin from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University, Professor Li Jinhui from School of Environment, Tsinghua University, and Professor Xue Jinjun from International Economic Policy Research Center of Nagoya University. Topics covered sustainable development of coupled human and natural systems, the future development of cities in Malaysia after COVID-19, regional circulation and ecosystem, sustainable and integrated urban footprint analysis, progress in China's farmland soil carbon sequestration and emission reduction technologies, progress in environmental pollution and biodegradation of plastic waste and microplastics, China's plan for the control of land waste plastics into the sea, and the sustainable energy system after COVID-19.
The six sub-venues were organized centering on the sustainable energy systems (convener: Associate Professor Zhang Zhendong from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Professor Haslenda Hashim from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), sustainable waste management (convener: Associate Professor Zhan Lu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Professor Chew-Tin Lee from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), sustainable water management (convener: Associate Professor Li Chunjie from Shanghai Jiao Tong University), sustainable agriculture and food supply (convener: Researcher Zhou Sheng from Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences), circular economy (convener: Professor Dong Xiaobin from Beijing Normal University) and clean technologies (convener: Professor Chew-Tin Lee from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia). Brief presentations and Q&A sessions are set up for the two poster sub-venues, fulfilling an efficient communication. A major feature of this conference is that students have the opportunity to conduct academic exchanges with experts and scholars on the same stage. In addition to the theme reports, approximately half of the oral reports are given by postgraduate students in each sub-venue, which to a large extent inspire the students' academic ideas.
At the closing ceremony, Executive Chairman of the Conference, Associate Professor Li Chunjie and Executive Chairman of the Conference, Professor Chin Siong Ho respectively delivered speeches of appreciation on behalf of the organizers. Professor Jiři Jaromir Klemeš, Editor-in-Chief of Jounal of Cleaner Production, addressed the conference with his concluding remarks. 28 oral reports and 4 poster reports were awarded top reports. Lastly, the organizer of the next conference, Professor Fujiwara Takeshi from Okayama University, introduced the basic situations of ICLCA2021.
The International Conference on Low Carbon Asia and Beyond started in2015. It was initiated by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and has been held for 5 sessions in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries. The conference focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), centering on the sustainable development issues faced by Asian countries. With a joint participation of universities, research institutes, enterprises and the governments, this conference attracts experts, scholars, entrepreneurs and officials from different regions of all over the world, and has achieved wide-ranging implications.
